Fortunately for Mrs and me , where we live, the Air Quality Index is merely Unhealthy . Down closer to Santa Cruz, 50 or 60 miles south from where I live, AQI is off the chart at 600, pushing 700. There are something like 500 fires right now in California because of the lightning storm last weekend, and nobody left to fight them. Down Boulder Creek, and Scotts Valley, where the AQI is 700, the residents are on their own. It’s really, really bad.

Yikes - that’s bad. Stay safe, and I hope that all of our California Oppos are doing the same--

What a decade this year has been. So far.

Don’t be so dramatic. This is only the 2176th day of 2020, and the 8 6587657654th day of the current presidential regime.

I’m surprised President Trump hasn’t tweeted his pleasure at seeing California burn.

Thanks. Messy times.

Our air quality shifts with the wind, sometimes it’s like putting your head over a campfire and sometimes totally fine.

I drove all over San Diego and Los Angeles just recently, didn’t see a single fire.
Most of these fires seems to be in low populated zones, not like the crazy property damage of over a decade ago.
Hopefully it stays that way.

the upside is that we all already have masks!

Give it time. Maybe he’ll link it to antifa or some kind of D hoax.

Well if California raked the forest floor like Finland this wouldn't be an issue.

He’s back on you guys not raking enough:
“I see again the forest fires are starting,” he said at a rally in swing-state Pennsylvania . “They’re starting again in California. I said, you gotta clean your floors, you gotta clean your forests — there are many, many years of leaves and broken trees and they’re like, like, so flammable, you touch them and it goes up.”
“Maybe we’re just going to have to make them pay for it because they don’t listen to us,” he added.

Haven’t opened my windows even a sliver since like Tuesday and air filter on 24/7. SF has had about 3 hours of not smelling like a bonfire. Can’t even imagine down by Santa Cruz.
I’m really sad I never did any hiking in Bi g Basin. Now it’s all gone.

The CA fires are centered around Norcal right now. Norcal got significantly less rain this winter and then got a series of lightning storms last weekend that started 300+ fires.
Fire outlook for Socal is better - not great - but better.

It’s been hovering between 175-200 here all day, and it’s hitting nearly 250 a little up I-80. But yeah, Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley, that’s rough news. Looks like it’s tearing right through Redwoods SP.
I’ve got family near the base of Mt. Diablo. They’ve got a go-bag ready and waiting, hoping the fire doesn’t climb around the mountain and go down the west slope . Prevailing winds should prevent that, but it’s 2020, so who knows what calamity the world has in store next. With it’s huge prominence against its surroundings , I imagine seeing Diablo go up would be a terrifying sight.

And this shot of Lake Berryessa is heart-breaking. I’ve done a lot of hiking around this area over the years.

We were at 162 earlier today (Martinez). Now it is "only" 129 -still "unhealthy". Not going to get much better for awhile....

I drove up there with Nick Has an Exocet and IM, I’m pretty sure that’s the one where we got out and took the dogs down the shore. Hard to imagine that.

Agreed. Even in this time of year, where everything is somewhat yellow and brown from the overall dryness, it’s still a gorgeous area to drive, hike, and spend time around.

Our Dear Leader is making fun of us at his campaign rallies. Nasty man, he.
This is a major deal. The fires all out in Australia? News stories made it sound like the entire continent was ablaze. California is beginning to look that way.

Fires are out but the cleanup and recovery will take a while. It's looking like a La Nina year for the first time since 2010/11 so things may be a little damp from here on in...
